Dmitriy Dey, the Kazakh geologist who first spotted the site after watching a documentary about ancient sites, and wondering whether his own country had such areas, And he believes that the figures built along straight lines on elevations were “horizontal observatories to track the movements of the rising sun.”

His research suggests that the Mahandzhar culture, a Stone Age tribe living in the region from 7,000 BC to 5,000 BC, could have created some of the the older structures.

“Everything is linked through the cult of the sun,” Mr Dey told The New York Times.
