Algiers — The Sub-regional Coordinator of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for North Africa, Lamourdia Thiombiano, hailed Thursday Algeria's efforts for the development of agriculture and rural areas.

At the end of his discussions with Water Resources and Environment Minister Abdelouahab Nouri, the FAO representative told the press that he discussed with Nouri the investment projects launched by Algeria for the building of dams and the electrification in rural areas.

In this regard, Thiombiano underlined that Algeria's experience in the field should be "better highlighted."

"Our role in the promotion of South-South cooperation is to highlight this experience across the African continent," he explained.

He said that FAO will continue to support and strengthen cooperation with Algeria, especially in the field of rural development, and enhance the support of partners to the agricultural sector.

For his part, Nouri said that "many projects have been launched in rural areas over the past 30 years to improve the living conditions of the population."

Algeria seeks to further develop this cooperation and make of it a model for the region, he added.

"We have expressed the desire of the Algerian authorities to increase FAO representation in Algeria, in order to allow the organization to extend its action not only in Algeria but also over the Maghreb and the Sahel regions, he added.
