Several players of Egypt’s Olympic team expressed their optimism and determination ahead of the Pharaohs opening match in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt were drawn in group B along with Algeria, Mali and Nigeria. They are set to face Algeria in their first group match on 29 Novemeber in M’Bour, Senegal.

Zamalek winger Mahmoud Kahraba expressed his optimism in the team’s ability to win the tournament, which acts as the CAF qualifier for the Olympic football tournament.

“Our focus is to win the Cup and not just qualify for the Olympics,” Kahraba said in a television interview with Al-Hayat channel.

“The team have got a great selection of players and a great manager,” he added.

Moreover, Ahly youngster Ramadan Sobhy assured the fans that they didn’t travel for fun and that they are completely ready and serious for the “mission” that lies ahead.

“We’ve got a tough tournament ahead, but with a great team and coaching staff, we are confident in winning and qualifying for the Olympics,” he said.

“I’m excited to play in the Olympics, like my teammates who have won the U-20 AFCON and participated in the U-20 World Cup; these are tournaments I have never been to,” he added.

His teammate Mossad Awad revealed that winning the first match against Algeria will give them a push in the tournament.

“It’s a tough and important tournament, but the key to winning the Cup will be winning the first match against Algeria,” Awad said.

Awad, who doesn’t play on a regular basis with Al Ahly, said that the Olympic team have great players who don’t participate regularly with their respective clubs.

“However, I respect the managers’ choices, train hard and make use of every chance I get with the Olympic team,” he said.
