ALGIERS- Algeria expressed its satisfaction with the cancellation by the European Union Court of Justice, with immediate effect, of the agreement on agricultural and fish products trade liberalization, signed in March 2012 between the EU and Morocco, including the occupied Western Sahara.
"Algeria has noted with satisfaction the decision of the EU Court of Justice to cancel, with immediate effect, the EU Council's decision of 8 March 2012 on the agricultural agreement between the EU and the Kingdom of Morocco ," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
The EU Court's decision "has done justice to the people of the occupied Western Sahara," said the statement.
Through this decision, the EU reaffirms that Western Sahara is a "non-autonomous territory as defined by the UN, the Polisario Front remains the legitimate representative of the Western Sahara and the exploitation of the natural resources of the territory by the occupying power (Morocco) is illegal," said the Ministry's statement.
"The EU Court's decision is also a clear rejection of the fait accompli policy and recall the international community of its duty to abide by the international law," said the statement.
Besides, Algeria welcomes the fact that the EU Council affirmed in its defence speech that it fully supports the UN efforts to reach a stable and sustainable solution to the Western Sahara issue, and that no EU institution had never recognized any Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara."
Finally, the text underlines that the decision of the European Court confirms the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination in accordance with relevant resolutions of the UN, the African Union (AU) and the UN decolonization doctrine."
