Mining production figures released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) show that the platinum sector is still recovering from the 5-month long strike seen in 2014.

Platinum group of metals rose 24.9% year-on-year in November, while total mining production declined by 0.8%.

A cumulative growth of 3% was recorded in the mining sector for 2015 due to the low base effects.

Stats SA Survey Statistician, JP Terblanche, explains, “The PGMS (Platinum Group Metals), since July August in 2015, started to show a year-on-year increase due to that low base effect in 2014. So, yes, it seems they are marginally starting to reach production level figures prior to the strike in 2014.”
