Mogale City Municipal Mayor Koketso Seerane was forced to abandon a meeting with residents after they started hurling stones at him and his officials at the weekend.

The meeting with the community of the Tudor Shaft informal settlement on the West Rand was aimed at outlining the municipality's plans to relocate residents whose informal settlement was built on radioactive ground.

The municipality says it has spent over R30 million to install bulk infrastructure in Kagiso Extension 13, and on the West Rand where the community had agreed to be moved to.

The Housing Development Agency has pledged a further R57 million for the first phase of an RDP development project which will yield 366 housing units.

"A group of rowdy elements hurled stones at the Executive Mayor as he was outlining the plans, insisting on staying in their shacks in the radioactive area and disagreeing with those who were happy to move as was resolved in 2015. The vehicle of the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Barry Friedman, was hit with a brick", says the Municipality's Nkosaza Zali.

Zali adds: "The municipality is disappointed with the behaviour. We are pleased that these acts of anarchy did not result in any loss of life, thanks to the quick response of our public order police. We are adamant that no self-respecting government will leave our people to live in a perilous situation as Tudor Shaft."
