Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has called for calm and political tolerance ahead of 2016 local government elections.

On Friday evening, National Freedom Party (NFP) publicist, Phositshe Mbatha, was killed after being ambushed by unknown gunmen at his home in uLundi in KwaZulu Natal.

It's still unclear at this stage if Mbatha's murder was politically motivated. But King Zwelithini has urged people not to let politics cause bloodshed.

"We are heading towards elections in May. You know that politicians will be gunning for each other. Don't let them use the lives of people to further their interests. Do not allow politicians to use you. Just go and vote, don't sacrifice your lives."

Meanwhile traditional leaders in KwaZulu-Natal and Government have condemned calls by Izinduna or headmen for people in rural areas to boycott the upcoming local government elections.

Izinduna claim government owes them over R100 million in unpaid salaries.

There are more than 3 000 Izinduna in the province and government requires R250 million a year to pay their salaries.
