Twelve smugglers were arrested and 60 tons of foodstuffs were seized by a detachment of the People’s National Army (ANP) on Thursday morning in Bordj Badji Mokhtar said the ministry of National Defense in a communiqué.
“As part of strengthening border security and the fight against smuggling, a detachment of the People’s National Army arrested, on 7 April 2016 in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, twelve smugglers and seized an important quantity of foodstuffs amounting to 60 tons, loaded in six trucks and an all-terrain vehicle,” added the source.
Bordj Badji Mokhtar is on the border with Mali. Algeria currently hosts thousands of economic refugees from the neighboring country.
“Furthermore, and following the latest heavy rainfalls recorded in the town of Djarech, province of Al Oued, another detachment was able to rescue and evacuate five families, whose homes were flooded, while a significant number of cattle were saved,” said the ministry.
With a recent influx of refugees and growing Daesh presence in nearby Libya, Algeria has increased its military presence and involvement in local communities.
