Moscow authorities plan to remove all kiosks selling shawarma [kebabs] from the city's streets, the head of the city's trade and services department Alexei Nemeryuk said in an interview with the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper on Tuesday.

“We are removing shawarma from the streets. There will be no shawarma anymore,” Nemeryuk said. He said that stalls still selling shawarma will cease to trade after their lease expires.

According to Nemeryuk, repeated checks carried out by Russia's consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor revealed “the absence of any desire of the owners of kiosks to bear even the slightest costs” to comply with sanitary regulations.

A wave of kiosk demolitions swept Moscow in February. Two months before that, the city authorities ordered the removal of 104 shopping properties that, according to them, were built illegally.
